The trail has a packed crushed limestone surface for a smooth ride. Maintenance and improvements are ongoing as funding and volunteer availability permits.
Built on inactive rail beds, 41.5 miles of the trail is nearly level with an average grade of less than 1%, except at Middle Run Road at MP 21.76, just northeast of New Bethlehem, where ramps were created to replace a missing bridge. The ramps were recently improved to lessen the slope to a 9-11% grade. The 9-mile Sligo Spur has a grade of up to 3-4% in places. Please see the current status report for current trail surface conditions by section.
