The trail has a packed crushed limestone surface for a smooth ride where improvements have been made. Improvements are ongoing as funding and volunteer availability permits.
Built on inactive rail beds, 41.5 miles of the trail is nearly level with an average grade of less than 1%, except at Middle Run Road at MP 21.76, just northeast of New Bethlehem, where ramps were created at a 10-12% grade to replace a missing bridge. The 9-mile Sligo Spur, which has not yet been improved except for the first mile north from Lawsonham, has a grade of up to 3% in places. See the current status report for current trail surface conditions by section.
